New Marine Safety laws Introduction

Victorias Marine safety laws will be modernized and strenghthened to better equip Police and regulators to improve safety on the states waterways under new legislation introduced into parliament this week. Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas said the Marine Safety bill was the outcome of a comprehensive review over the past two years, of the Marine act 1988 as part of the Brumby Labor governments sweeping program of transport reform.

Concrete pathway to be built

Works are just about to begin to provide a pathway down to the fuel bowsers from the ramp at the Service centre so that our customers no longer have to walk in the gravel, we apologise for any inconvience to boat owners as the soil has to be excavated out to allow for the concrete to be formed. This should in the end make the area a little more attractive, and pleasurable for all.

Dust off those rods and reels, and don’t forget to re-line your reels with new fishing line for the season ahead. Its going to be a boomer of a season, if it is anything to go by the number of Squid being caught around the bays at the moment ,they are in plague proportions at the moment, with many even being caught off the local jetties. Westerport is reporting large numbers of squid and large schools of gummies. 5-7Kg Snapper still being caught out wide from Carrum in 17-19 mtrs these fish are not new fish but fish that have decided to stay for the winter, anglers report 1-2 fish being caught sporadically.

From a few of our own locals, things are a little quiet on the fishing front, this has mainly been due to the weather, a chill in the air, and the odd occasional shower, so now is the time to go down and see the team down at the service centre and have that boat ship shape for the summer” its only around the corner”

Draft Marina Reserve Masterplan.

To all Boatowners, the City of Port Phillip is inviting public comment on the Draft Marina Reserve Masterplan as part of the process of finalising the plan.

submission(supporting or opposing) are invited until Monday 26th July 2010.

Council is particularly interested in the community’s views and potential changes to the draft masterplan including a skate bowl, the number and layout of carparking spaces, the need for and the level of lighting, and the location of toilet facilities.

All submissions will be reported to Council at a Council meeting on Monday 9 August 2010. You may attend the council meeting and talk about your submission if you wish.

Submission form is available from the St Kilda Marina Office- during office hours.

New Dock At K Row.

By now most members of the marina would have noticed, the new dock being assembled next to the re- fuelling dock, this is to make room for the berthing of two larger vessels in the water, hopefully we shall see berthing of these, by middle to late February, also after the dock completion, a concrete path will run adjacent to the concrete capping from the service centre ramp, down till the new dock area.

Why Boats sink?

This is a question that has been asked for many years by the general public, why does it happen? well firstly we are human and we make mistakes and sometimes we pay dearly for them, either in the hip pocket or by way of injury or loss of life. But alot of these mistakes can be avoided through a Common Sense attitude, regular maintenance, how many times have I heard” there is no R.A.C.V. out there” so take your boat and have it checked by the qualified Service centre, get them to do a 50 point inspection report on your vessel, the motor the running gear, safety gear, trailer etc ,for the bigger boats have the toilet and sea cocks inspected, the bilge pumps and genset serviced the electricals checked etc. so ask yourself is my boat seaworthy? is it safe? how long has it been since I’ve checked all the things that could go wrong? ” If in doubt get it checked out” your life and the safety of your loved ones could depend on it. and remember to slow it down, “speed kills” just not on the roads only. at night slow it down and in the fog or poor visibility, show Caution and Courtesy and have a safe boating season for the 2010 year, and remember ” Don’t Drink And Drive” that means the boat as well.

Dredging 2009

Customers are advised, to be on the lookout for the Dredge which is due in very shortly, Birdons are currently making there way from Patterson river and are due this week, so in saying that ,the entrance should be nice and deep for the oncoming season. remember to take heed and slow down when the dredge is in the entrance and to always pass on the side of the diamonds.
